As we've watched fires break out in lightly forested areas, burning out cinderblock buildings and melting aluminum car wheels in California without torching surrounding trees and bushes; and in Canada, infighting forest fires in a perfect line, it's obvious our Defense Contractors have finally created the Ray Gun, or Destructo Beam!
Well, Science Fiction aside [although what was Science Fiction 50 years ago is now Science Fact], it is a fact that these weapons have not only been developed, but they are in use by the US, Russia, and China [and apparently now, Israel - which also has 90+ nuclear weapons (ready to detonate on its Arab neighbors at the earliest opportunity].
So, it's time to bring you up-to-date on the latest Defense gizmo that has now been unleashed on US enemies [Keep in mind that Members of Congress, DHS, FBI, and some of our Military Establishment regard Common Citizens as "potential enemies", but more-so, Combat Vets as Actual Enemies].
Here's a brief explanation of these weapons, which include variations of others including Particle Beam, Laser-Induced Plasma Channel Streams were developed to create "streams" of electromagnetic energy the can be precisely directed over great distances to target and destroy enemy targets.
The four major categories of DEWs are:
1) High Power Microwave Based [HPM] DEWs

a) HPM DEWs are like a high-power radar transmitter, but they can produce extremely high peak powers over tens of megawatts. They generate electromagnetic (EM) energy in the RF/microwave frequency range of roughly 1 - 35 GHz using an antenna to direct the energy to the target of interest.
b) When the HPM energy hits a target, it penetrates the target’s electronics via both intentional ports of entry (POEs) (i.e., front doors), such as an antenna, or through unintentional backdoors), e.g., cracks, seams, or cables.
c) When the EM energy enters a target system, it reradiates inside and induces currents/voltages in the pins of the electronics that are sufficient to produce either a long-term electronic upset or permanent damage.
2) Laser Based DEWsLaser-Based Warfare
(1) They can engage targets at speed of light with essentially no time-of-flight as compared to conventional Kinetic Energy Weapons (KEW) that require a finite travel time.
(2) The total number of shots a laser can fire is limited only by the amount of chemical fuel (in the case in chemical lasers) or electrical power (for solid-state and fibre lasers.
b) Cost per shot in the case of laser based DEWs is much lower than in the case of conventional KEWs. Projectile weapon systems, guided missiles in particular, expend a lot of expensive hardware such as rocket motors, guidance systems, avionics, seekers, airframes and the like, every time these are fired.
c) In case of laser weapons, cost of each laser firing is essentially the cost of chemical fuel or electrical power consumed.
(1) One of the world’s fastest cruise missiles, BrahMos, with a supersonic speed of 2.8-Mach to 3-Mach, takes about five minutes to reach its target at its maximum operational range of 300 km.
(2) The same target, when targeted by a laser DEW, would be hit in a millisecond, making these particularly suitable for engaging fast-moving targets.
(3) Multiple target engagement and rapid re-targeting features of laser based DEWs is attributed to their being powered by rechargeable chemical energy (in the case of chemical lasers) or electrical energy (in the case of solid-state and fibre lasers). Shifting from one target to another involves only repointing and refocusing of the beam-directing optical system.
3) Particle Beam Weapons [PBW]

Particle beams penetrate beyond the target's surface to affect its interior, making particle beams immune to measures that can deflect lasers, like brightly polished, mirror-like surfaces. A powerful beam could generate enough heat to burn a target, ignite its fuel supply, melt it, and render it aero-dynamically unstable, or frying a missile’s onboard electronics.
a) Charged Particle: A spatially localized group of electrically charged particles that have approximately the same position, kinetic energy (resulting in the same velocity), and direction. The kinetic energies of the particles are much larger than the energies of particles at ambient temperature. The high energy and directionality of charged particle beams make them useful for many applications in particle physics (see Particle beam#Applications and Electron-beam technology). (from Wikipedia)
Such beams can be split into two main classes:
1) Unbunched Beams (coasting beams[1] or DC beams which have no longitudinal substructure in the direction of beam motion.
2) bunched beams, in which the particles are distributed into pulses (bunches) of particles. Bunched beams are most common in modern facilities, since the most modern particle accelerators require bunched beams for acceleration
b) Neutral Particle: Neutral particle beams are lasers, and work by accelerating particles without an electric charge (e.g., neutrons) to speeds close to the speed of light and directing them against a target. The neutrons knock protons out of the nuclei of other particles they encounter, generating heat on the target object.
c) Russian DEW blast on Tianjin, China? resembles the damage done in the California fires. At first, I thought it might be a nuclear blast, but, after reviewing it for traces of radio-activity I concluded it was a DEW.
4) Laser Induced-Plasma Channel [LIPC]
The Laser-Induced Plasma Channel destroys anything that conducts electricity better than the air or ground surrounding it (e.g., unexploded ordnance). It uses a laser to carve an electromagnetic path through the air that accommodates a high-voltage beam. Create that path, increase the voltage, and destroy your target.

Process: A high intensity, super-short duration (two-trillionths of a second) laser pulse strikes a lens–surrounding air to focus the beam, keeping the laser pulse tight.
a) A strong pulse creates an electromagnetic field around itself so powerful that it strips electrons from air molecules, creating a channel of plasma through the air, which is composed of neutral particles acting as insulators; the plasma channel is a good conductor (relative to air that is not ionized around it) the path of the laser beam becomes a kind of filament.

c) Although lightning arcs from cloud-to-ground via the path of least resistance, the high-voltage current finds its way down its filament instead of arcing unpredictably through the air like a lightning bolt. Essentially, the laser creates the path of least resistance between the power source and the target.

Returning to the lead-in of this blogpost, I suggest that only the US (and possibly the Russians) had this technology since the 1960s, developed, perhaps, with the assistance of some of our alien visitors.
Thus, the second image (from more than a decade ago) in this post shows the results of a DEW strike on a hostile, unsuspecting alien craft by one of our Space Force fighters.
(As I've mentioned in the past, our US Space Force is more than 60 years old, and is somewhat more advanced than is publicized.)
